Though the sponsored links are the only source of income for Google from its mailing application, GMail, it is often irritating to see them. And, GMail doesn't provide any options to switch them off. (Available in Google Apps for your domain as a paid feature). It uses the content being displayed and pulls up the appropriate ads. Last week, one of my friends shared a link on removing the sponsored links. Its quite a round-about way (Approach-I) of doing things. It works on the assumption that Google will not add ads when the content is sad (like death, suicide, kill, etc). Try out that solution here.

Having worked already on GmailGreaseMonkey API, I have decided to employ my own GreaseMonkey script to do the job for me. Using GmailGreaseMoney API, I have modified the DOM to remove the sponsored links. Since Google has obfuscated their code, it was not possible for me to make the script loosely coupled. Its still a little DOM dependent. and it will work until Google makes some changes to it. Download the script here. To use this script, you need to have GreaseMonkey plugin installed on your browser.
For learning: Implement Approach-I as a GreaseMonkey script.
Update: Remove ads in Orkut using this.
