Free as in 'Free beer'

I really wonder why do people want everything for free as in 'Free beer'. This is related to my blog posts '[How to] Remove sponsored links from GMail' and '[How to] Remove ads from Orkut'. Though I have scripted the solutions for removing the ads, I am totally against that and have disabled the same on my machine. (They were more of a learning for me than to actually remove the ads.) I recommend those who you use my scripts to just use it for learning.

Here are some of the questions for those who are in favor of these scripts:
1) The main source of income for the service providers is through ads. Why do you want everything for free? I know some friends of mine who use the ads by copy/pasting the link(the service provider wont be getting the referral bonus here) than by clicking on the link (in which case the provider will be getting money).
2) Secondly, do you want the service provider to make money by doing some analysis on your private data? Or, by selling them?
3) Will you stop complaining when the service is down? How can you expect a service to be 100% perfect when you just wanted to enjoy the service without paying for it?

Improving the way of displaying ads and the relativeness to the content are the important thingy for the advertisers.

  1. Slightly differ: "Do no evil" some say. displaying ads right on the top in orkut is annoying to me.. say when I browse thro orkut photo albums, every time I need to scroll the page down to get the full view of the photo.

All I say is, show ads. So at convenient places, showing at the top area will only lead to more accidental clicks. Since if someone who really wanted relevant ads will go for it even if its at the bottom.

  2. @Vijesh: Yeah, agreed. Advertisers need to be blamed for not considering usability while placing the ads. I know people who wanted to open ad but they will copy the URL and dont click on the ad.

Regarding the Orkut issue, listen to what Google says here -- http://googleindia.blogspot.com/2009/09/orkut-helps-advertisers-to-engage-with.html
