PreCursor is a research project worked upon by Pranav Mistry of the MIT Fluid Interfaces group. The project aims at building an invisible layer that hovers in front of the screen and enables novel interaction that reaches beyond the current touch screens. PreCursor provides the missing hover interaction to touch screens.

What I don't understand is, how is this different (more useful) from a touchscreen? I mean, it is just inches/centimeters away from the screen. Unless, they have plans for some more improvement. Just a thought!
ReplyDelete@Saurav: This gives opportunity for more gestures to be built for the touch devices.
ReplyDeleteAm a big fan of Pranav but On the contrary i feel Touch devices have a lot more Gestures than computers. To name some
ReplyDelete1.Click.(as you mentioned but can also be called as a tap).
2.Double click(Rephrased to double Tap).
3.Long Click.
4.swipe(left/right).
5.pinch.
The coolest part of this project is that its gonna bring hardware independence and with windows 8 on the horizon(purely a touch based computing machine that blends the power of windows 7 and windows phone 7), people can reuse their older machines with Pranav's mystery device that converts your oldermachines to a touch(kinda) device.
This invention has more potential than a touch screen. With a touch screen, all actions are limited to a 2-dimensional surface: the screen. With this invention, actions can potentially occur within a 3-dimensional surface that is slightly above the screen.
ReplyDeleteAnother advantage with this invention is that since the user does not need physically to touch the screen, it is possible to avoid depositing fingerprints on the screen, even without using gloves.
