Sun Tech Days 2009 - Day2

The second day of the Sun Tech Days 2009 conference started with the keynote session from Matt Thompson, a senior member of Sun. He gave a briefing on Cloud computing and its role in the modern day. It was followed by some demos on Zembly, JavaFx. Again, the father of Java turned up on stage and this time for felicitating the top promoters of Open Source in India. Mr. Shukla from Infy and Dr. Pathak from IIT Mumbai bagged the awards. Then, there was 'Java Jacket Give away'. Six to Seven guys were picked up randomly and were asked to show their talents ( like singing, dancing, etc) on the spot and the winners were given away with Java jackets. From there , the morning sessions kicked off.

Morning Sessions
  • Improving Java Performances - This session throwed lights on the areas where one should focus to improve the performances of Java Systems. Some key areas to focus include Application Code optimizing, Application Server settings and JVM settings. Lots of options regarding the Garbage Collection models, thread local allocation were also talked about in the session.
  • LWUIT & Dynamic Services - This session is a part of Client Technology track and it covers Java TV's architecture and the Java's support to the users. LWUIT is a advanced UI tool kit for developing applications for Java TV. The session also covered how a dynamic service can be added to setup box. To know more about this, click here.
Afternoon Sessions
  • Intel Technical Session - The first session in the afternoon was meant for the sponsors. As I have been a part of the Intel family, I tend to attend that session. But, unfortunately, I couldnt grab much as it was more on optimizing the process execution in Intel processors running OpenSolaris. It was tough for me to keep up with processor architecture terms.
  • Javascript Best practices - This is one of the sessions I enjoyed the most. The content of the presentation was very crisp to the topic and the presenter delivered it with confidence. There are lots of take-aways from that session.
  • How to involve in OpenSource projects? - This session was more targetted towards bringing in students into OpenSource projects. The presenter presented about the various OpenSource projects supported by Sun and gave an overview for the students in contributing to the same.
  • Java ME and embedded applications - The final session of the day was on mobile technology and the embedded applications. The presenter showed demos of some cool embedded applications. It was a good way to end the day.
Day-3 is meant to be a University day and the sessions are extension of the sessions we had today. I am skipping it due to various reasons.

Ending my fast tour on Java world here.
