My favorite browser, Firefox, has recently released its new version 3.6. Without waiting, I had updated to the latest version and most of the extensions and Add-ons continue to work in this new version. There aren’t many new features added in this release (unlike Firefox 3.5) rather there are improvements to many existing features. Download it from here. Portable version can be downloaded from here.
- Personas: Personalize the look of your Firefox by selecting new themes called Personas in a single click and without a restart.
- Plug-in Updater: Firefox automatically detects plug-ins which are out-of-date and the potential security vulnerabilities because of them.
- Performance: Improved Javascript engine for faster rendering of the web pages. Startup time improvement. Overall browser responsiveness.
- Stability improvements. Crashes due to third party plug-ins are reduced.
- Enhanced support for open Video and Audio. Firefox 3.6 supports HTML5 video in full screen mode.
- Lots of features added under the hood for developers.
What’s missing
One of the much needed features I was expecting to be part of Firefox 3.6 is ‘Per-Process browsing’, a separate process per tab. Mozilla has named it as ‘Project Electrolysis’. The first phase of this project is targeted at having a separate process per plug-in a.k.a out-of-process-plugin (OOPP). It is going to be a major part of the next update from Mozilla, Firefox 3.6.5 code-named as “Lorentz”.
